I moved by DB from EC2 to RDS as RDS does automatic backups and also allows scheduled snapshots.

I think it's worth learning and understanding RDS service as it is built into AWS system. Something I'll be looking into soon.

Mark - interesting stuff, have been considering RDS, but hesitant to jump until we fully investigate it.

Questions: Any performance improvements using RDS? If you do a RDS backup is it just like a mysqldump, can you move it to a non RDS server?

Interesting article. I didn't know RDS was a "Shared" SQL server. It's like AzureSQL I guess, where you share the SQL engine and ram with others. I had read that AzureSQL performance is not predictable as it would your personal MSSQL be. So, I wonder if someone puts heavy load on RDS, how it affects others on the same server?

Nice article Ben.

I selected Multi AZ not because it was a conscious decision but because I did not have a clue what I was doing and it sounded like a good idea for the future.
So, glad he concurs.

Just the point regarding the SUPER privileges.

Initially Aware threw that error up at me and I spent a lot of time trying to work out how to give myself root privileges. Bottom line is you cant but you do not need it
either though Aware says you do.

It is a furfy error message and has to do with max_packets. It defaults to a small value. You need to change it.... make it 134217728 and the error will disappear.
