So it turns out that barcode fonts are not cheap. I did however find a JS script to generate SVG images on the fly in HTML which I thought looked quite interesting (especially as it appears to do some validation and some nice formatting.

The downside is I don't have enough JS/Aware experience to understand how to use it (or indeed if it would work within AIM). Can anyone assist?

I was hoping to be able to place it on both forms and reports.

Do you know that Kendo UI can generate barcodes? Will it meet your requirements?

John, since you have played with Aware & Kendo, my question is, if a component, i.e. Barcode is not implemented by AwareIM and there is on object being of Barcode being instantiated by Aware,
Firstly, is it possible to add in Kendo's components that were not implemented by Aware?
Secondly, How does one get to do data binding to backend server when the data plumbing and event handlers were not set for that component?

Yes. Anything in the Kendo UI library can be used.

Via script, one can either:

Create everything needed OR
Let AIM do it's thing and then unplug what is not wanted and plug in what is wanted

Thanks John for re-affirming it. I was always under the impression that, unless a Kendo component was implemented by Aware, we had no access or way to use it on the forms, i.e. a Barecode. And that's why many of us feel handy-caped that lots of Kendo features and components are not available in Aware. But the second question comes up, will such attempt (implementing new components) take up so much time and efforts that defeats the whole FAST Aware development?

With regards to barcodes in reports, all you need to do is install the font in the report writer and set the attribute to that font - I output barcoded documents on most my reports for inward routeing/auto assignment back into awareim. But that's only on Reports.. forms I wouldn't know

Barcode fonts are not cheap and they will allow any number to be input as they are just a font.

Just quickly playing around (5 mins) with the Kendo it doesn't appear to be evaluating EAN13 properly.

Take the first example on the Kendo dojo page and change it from ean8 to ean13 and paste the above barcode in. The photo of the cheese loses its barcode suggesting that the barcode is invalid. If however you delete the check digit (the last "2") then it generates the barcode but without the check digit

If you do the same experiment here http://lindell.me/JsBarcode/generator/ then the barcode will generate both with the check digit in place and without the check digit - however if you don't type the check digit in this case it will calculate the check digit and add it to the barcode.

So it looks like the Kendo has some bugs in it at the moment.

How would I go about implementing this http://lindell.me/JsBarcode/generator/ and then calling it within AwareIM?

This is an involved process beyond what I'll be able to address in a forum post.

You can hire someone to do it, but it will likely be more expensive than the fonts.
