i'm not sure Bruce is wanting that there should be any distinguishing.
he might mean that the default operation would run anyway even if it is an editable field (cause he wants to save that record in a RegularUser Attribute for later processing), thus no distinguishing needs to be implemented.
Anyway, you can likely achieve what you want using a Custom Query with Input Tags. But it takes some work, and behind the scenes it is not elegant.
