HTML Documtnat Template Attribute Tags

I'm sending an email message and when sending via the notification object with a message 'Blah <<BO.Attribute>> ' the email sends and received OK.

When I use a html message the document template does not fill out the attribute and when received the email has the general text without attribute values. I am using the << BO.Attribute >&gt tags

Is there a trick to getting the attributes to pass to the html document?
