Modify Child after Modifying Parent - asks to save Parent

Hi Everyone,

I have a conundrum that I am sure people must have dealt with before, with a simple Parent -> Child relationship, once the Parent is created and saved if you then modify the parent -just say edit a description, then if you want to navigate to the children aware gives a message about needing to save the parent first... how do you deal with this?

Am I stuck in magic land too much with the way I am thinking about this? surely its possible to have say a purchase order with header and line details and be able to navigate around the whole order and save at the end?

Are you using the latest build? I think some changes were made recently.
Try new build if you are not.

it only does it once up until you proceed past the save dialog. next time you change an attribute in the header, if you go to the children it won't do it.
it must be a bug because it has been around since version 6. if it was not a bug, then surely it would ask to save the changes every time you navigated from parent to children, not just the first time per version of the children.
obviously it can't be fixed. it still occurs in b2169.

There are no bugs here.

If you make a change to a form and then try to navigate away from the form, the system prompts you to save changes because you are leaving unsaved changes behind.

If you want the system to automatically save the changed form without asking the question, then tick the "Auto save when the form is closed or abandoned" checkbox in the properties of the form.

I think he has another tab that is a reference tab to show the children of the parent in the same form. I have had this exact problem recently, where a customer attribute was changed and I would click on the tab that shows a reference list of it's referrals and I would get the same message, without even leaving the form.

My Form is setup so the parent attributes are at the top and then yes at the bottom there is a tab that has a couple of different children objects... I can click into the tab to view the children, but if I were to click add or edit - which opens in a popup then I get the message...
I can understand the behavior was just hoping to be able to avoid it and have a save option to save all editing to the parent and children in one go...

Have you tried the "Auto save when the form is closed or abandoned" checkbox ?

Hi Callum,

I have discussed this issue with Support as I have run into it before and thought I had it working but I realised that it worked when Creating but not when editing.

I have sent you this privately but for other benefit.... here is the fix from Support...

" Popup window inside a popup window is a problem with auto-refresh. If you make the first window (order header) modeless and add OrderLines object into the auto-refresh options of the OrderHeader form it will fix both problems."

The referred to "both problems" means..
a) Updating a Total in the Parent (SUM of Child Record values)
b) Dialog asking to save the changes to the Parent

Looks like there was some misunderstanding what the actual issue is. There is a problem with auto-refresh of popup windows and it will be fixed in the next build.

YES.
Please note what I described about the characteristics/behavior of this bug:
"it only does it once up until you proceed past the save dialog. next time you change an attribute in the header, if you go to the children [eg. interact with the reference attribute grid such as click a button which brings up a pop up] it won't do it [won't ask if you want to save the changes in the header]."
The 'first-time-only' aspect about the bug might have some bearing on the particular fix which is required, hence I restate this.
EDIT: Okay, will prepare a bsv.

What you are describing sounds like a completely different issue altogether. If you are sure it happens please prepare a short BSV that demonstrates the problem with a SUCCINCT description how to reproduce it - step by step.
