New Programmer - Aware IM

sabbirehal

Hi Group,

I am a Magic programmer from 15 years and using uniPaaS 1.9 with SQL Server 2008. I wanted to learn aware im and need help in setting up aware im installation for development purposes with SQL server as a database. Can some one suggest the best way. I can install clean new Windows Server 2008 where as I have already SQL Server 2008 setup which I can use with new aware im. I need to know if I can use new windows server 2008 for the web server plus the aware im installation on my web server?
Please advise.

Thanks
Sabbi

Welcome to Aware IM Sabbi.

There are quite a few ex Magicians now using Aware IM (myself included) and I am sure you will find the change a positive experience.

I have sent you a PM to assist in getting you started.

Nice to meet you Sabbi,

I also used magic a "tad" before finding aware. Pretty sure this will put a smile on your face.

I am using SQL server also. Aware uses at a minimum 2 databases, the "main" aware one, which has your license info, (its tiny, but make sure you have it backed up cause of this) and it has all of your application logic for ALL of your applications. There is also a test database which has a copy of all of the tables from all of your applications (with a strange table name prefix to allow 2 diff applications to have the same named table.

So, I have (being very creative) a DB called Aware and one called AwareTest. When you create a new application, you have an option to select to have the application's operational (vs test) database in it's own DB. I suggest you select this. Now, life is good. Easy to backup and restore a db if you want to move to new hardware

Welcome Sabbi, I'm also an Ex Magician, who started Magic in 80's... 🙂

One advice to you. Give Aware a good chance to learn it. It has a very powerful database ORM & Data plumbing system. An awesome Rule Base & Process Engine. This alone is worth the gold. It takes away so much headache and gives you freedom at the same time. You can develop impressive SaaS apps very easily with some powerful builtin features like PROTECT and READ PROTECT.

Ability to build app that performs tasks in the background is another great feature to give your app "Automatic Processing" v.s. "Manual Processing" by a user.

In V7, you have a very extensive tool to build "Bowers based" Mobile that is as powerful as your desktop app that runs on any mobile.
V7 uses state of the Art Kendo UI library, this puts Aware on the top of the list when it comes to UI.
If you have a serious app to start, then jump in and you will learn it very fast...

If "Bruce Lee" can learn it, anyone can learn it... 😃 (j/k)

Hi Sabbi,

I was a junior magician a long long time ago. At first AwareIM seemed rather confusing and wasn't something that i picked up immediately. Thankfully i was already in a full-time job that allowed me to dabble with AwareIM day in / day out and over the period of about three weeks i got the hang of the 'actions' to accomplish most things.

Hang in there, once the penny drops. You wont turn back!

BEN! I "resemble" that comment. But don't worry, I can't use Karate as well as Mr. Lee did.

I used to be a Magic programmer too! Nice to see you here Sabi.

And now, I 'refuse' (hope my boss doesn't read this) to do anything with it LOL 😃 😃 😃

Thanks you very much to all and special regards to Mark Bailey who is helping me out these days. Hopefully I will have great time with aware im in the coming time.

Thanks again to all..

Hi Sabbi

We are not the oldest but the most stubborn or patience maybe of users (+9 years and counting)

When you reach a point where you are discussing approaches and trying to solve issues ping us here and we can Skype and do intros. Mark, Tom, Kingsley and a slew of others (who we see here but have not met) are amazing resources to help you get past the learning curve.

Anytime..
