Why is EDIT always a popup but VIEW will follow my output

I have a Layout with 2 panels. One has a query. the other is "empty" When select a row in the query I have a default action that would run a process and EDIT the object. Of course, this always opened in a new tab and NOT in the output panel. It took a long time (and help from Mark) to understand that a VIEW object will do what I want, but an EDIT object just loves to run in a popup.

Is this in the manual anywhere? Did my old eyes miss it?

Because Edit will hold the process waiting for you to save the form so you can't do anything else in the mean time(make sense to be a popup)
but view will not hold the process so it doesn't need your input to continue
