I would say that this should be high on the importance level. Showing the app to a customer, the 1st thing they asked, is how can they tell which record is selected.
My workaround is to use HTML for the panel header. (the other plus with this, while I like the addition of the menu button on a grid to combine all of the options, it makes each row VERY tall just to support the button. Again, my customers would rather see more data on the screen. These are desktop apps, and am sure with a mobile app, that would be a very good solution)
