Hello fellow (and female, looking @ you Heidi) Aware Developers.
Since I plan to spend a lot of quality time in this forum, let me introduce my self. (I do know many of the ex-magicians here, but for those who I don’t know, let me offer a very brief CV.
I started using Magic PC way way back in the Novell days. (started with V 2.36), I embraced the methodology of having my business logic stored within a database. The speed of development was a huge motivator in my adopting Magic as my solution of choice. I spent a few years working for the parent company. (Sometime, over some drinks, I should share some “funny” stories about my experiences there. Remind me to tell you why “Jerico” was soundly rejected as the code name for Magic V7 even after we had the buttons printed!)
Once, off on my own again, my customers were requiring a browswer based solution. I first migrated to Adobe Flex (since, 1st, with Adobe being a BIG company, I knew for certainty that they would be around and continue to support the product! NOT! And since HTML 5 was still not ready for prime time, was the best solution at the time).
Surprise Surprise, they abandoned Flex and while looking for alternatives, Sencha (ExtJS) was actively persuing Ex Flex developers. I look at Sencha and liked what I saw. Fast forward 3 years later, they have changed their focus to Fortune 100 companies, and have done their best to piss off the small developers. Also, while once I learned (most!) of the components properties, methods, events I was fairly productive in developing applications. I still had to write a LOT of code for the basic plumbing. They had an editor (called Sencha Architect) that automated most of the coding and, similar to how flex worked, had both a code and a design mode. This allowed me to develop in a WYSISYG mode. However, it seems like this now a low priority for Sencha. (The entire development team of SA has been let go and it is now being developed (maybe?) by an outside company.
I have MUCH better things to do with my life than code entire applications in Eclipse. (Things like: Tequila, Photography, Vodka, Wine, Women and Song…) So with Heidi’s Roger’s and Mark’s help, I have decided on using Aware for most of my future development.
The reason that I wanted to introduce my self, is that I expect to post a lot of questions / comments in the forum. I am sure, being a NOOB that a lot of them will be ones that have been discussed or answered in the past, or just show my lack of reading ALL of the documentation, so please bear with me.
Bruce Lomasky.
P.S. I live in Connecticut (North East US). I do remember that this area was a hotbed of Magicians during my day using Magic. Wonder how many mmm.errrr. what DO you call an Aware Developer, besides smart?, are in my neck of the woods!
