Unsent emails exist?

I'm about to tackle writing a process that will run on a scheduled basis to determine if files exist in the UNSENT_EMAIL folder (or sub-folders). This process will notify the system administrator if files exist in this folder.

Has anyone tackled this issue and come up with a solution?

I've now tried unsuccessfully to use:

If FILE_SIZE('C:\AwareIM\UNSENT_EMAIL')>0 Then
SEND OutgoingEmail_Unsent_Emails_Exist TO SystemSettings
DISPLAY MESSAGE 'Unsent email file size:'+FILE_SIZE('C:\AwareIM\UNSENT_EMAIL')

No matter what folder I check with FILE_SIZE, I get a size of 4096.

I even checked the folder - C:\AwareIM and got 4,096 as well.

1) Has anyone successfully used FILE_SIZE to retrieve the size of a directory?

2) Suggestions for alternative ways to check for the existence of files in the UNSENT_EMAIL folder?

Don´t know about FILE_SIZE but thought about another possible solution. How about having a process that via FILE_EXISTS check if the UNSENT_EMAIL folder exists and if so alerts the administrator. The administrator takes care of the unsent email and then deletes the UNSENT_EMAIL folder (either manually or via a process)? Would that work (don´t know if you can delete the UNSENT_EMAIL folder?).

Perhaps you can use FILE_EXISTS checking for the existence of the folder - this requires that the folder be deleted when you process the action and recreated when unsent emails are added. That shouldn't be too hard.

Unfortunately FILE_EXISTS would not work. I often process batches of emails that automatically get dumped into the Unsent folder & processed by AwareIM as it talks to our Exchange server. I would have no idea when to delete the folder unless I know if it is empty.

Have you tried a wild card?

IF EXISTS(C:\AwareIM\UNSENT_EMAIL*.*)

Also remember that calls like this are case sensitive even on a Windows server...

How about every time you post a message to the folder, you also plop down a file (somefile.txt). Every time you purge the folder, you purge the file. So if somefile.txt exists, run process and purge the file.

You could use a java plug-in. Not only could this tell you if there are any files in the UNSENT_EMAIL folder, but you could check the create date of the file to see how long it has been there.

I've sent a note to support to check out a possible bug in FILE_SIZE when used on a folder.

If FILE_SIZE would return the correct size of the folder contents, I think I can easily manage the Unsent Items folder.

Will let you know when support responds.

Thanks Bob. I have no clue how to write a plug-in or I would.

Support has indicated that FILE_SIZE function was never supposed to work with directories & it will not updated to do so. The User Guide will have to be updated accordingly.
