Team: Few feature questions

Hi;

As part of my app, I need to do the followings and would like to know if these features are available in Aware:

1) Let's say I upload an image, is there a way in Aware that would allow me to create a Thumbnail (let's say 60x60) from the large image? I need to create an smaller image size.

2) Can we do "Batch/multi" upload at one time? Say, the user selects 10 images and click upload.

3) How can a developer know an upload was successful or failure? Is there some returned code on the success of the upload?

1) Yes, you can also display a thumbnail in a query display.
2) I think so, there is a function for uploading multiple documents, I'm not sure if that includes images. Docs and images are different types of attributes. If you are treating them as documents (files), then yes.
3) I suppose you could use IF EXISTS [filename] or similar to check, then REPORT ERROR if it fails.

I think things depend on whether you are uploading image files or adding objects that include an image attribute. Two different concepts.

I wasn't asking if we can show thumbnail in query. I was asking if Aware can create new thumbnail image from a large image? This is important, especially for Mobile with limited bandwidth. You don't want to sent a large image to Mobile or query that shows many rows. Not a good idea.

I had read that. As I mentioned, "Scaling down" doesn't mean reduction of size of image. I'm trying to transfer a smaller size to client when the full size is not needed.

Unless, Aware app server, actually created a newer smaller size in memory on the fly and stores a temp file on server to send to client, but I doubt it.

Again, my question isn't about displaying thumbnail image, bur rather a function in Aware to create a new one from large image.

Actually, I may provide a very large file and ask Aware to create 3 sizes (Large, Med, small) to store and depending on the client's form factor, I will use the appropriate size. This will speed up and uses much less bandwidth.

Let's see what support has to say and perhaps they can add this feature.

It would be very easy to implement a command line tools such as ImageMagik (http://www.imagemagick.org/). I use a command line tool to merge PDF documents. The concept is very easy to implement. This particular tools has a wealth of image manipulation features. Let's say you want to store three versions of an image uploaded by the user. This would be very simple to do by calling the command line function of this tool, or a similar one, using the EXECUTE PROGRAM action.

This is fantastic. So, are you saying on the server side, I can run an external EXE program (command line) to do image manupulation for me? If yes, that solves my problem. This way I can create them and then have a process to assign their new file name and locations to the attributes of the object. Am I on the right track?

Next, we need to see if Aware can do Multi upload?
And along with that question, comes the second question. Does Aware do upload in Async mode? So, it will not freeze up server?

If not, may be for next release feature.

Never mind! Found it... 🙂

Called "Bulk Upload" and works awesome. A life saver, because users don't want to sit and upload one by one.

Ben,
Aware IM actually has functions to handle all of you image needs 🙂. Take a look at SCALE_IMAGE function and this can be used so in your scenario i.e. the application automatically creates 3 different images (different sizes) from the uploaded large image (placed then in different attributes).

That's even better. Do you know if it is possible to store the larger images as individual files on the server and ONLY the small one in the attribute of the database? I'm trying to avoid Large images gets stored in database but by having a thumbnail, I can show it quickly.

After the image is processed, you can certainly choose to store an original file on the server and various smaller images as attributes. AwareIM provides a variety of functions to accomplish just that.
