Distinct query

When using a query, might there be a way to return only unique instances?

Basically the same functionality as a SQL SELECT DISTINCT?

I believe you either need to use a stored procedure and call it from AwareIM or create BO and then make up some rules to populate that BO with values that do not exist with the same name.

It would be nice to have a DISTINCT action.

What is the business goal you are trying to achieve.

There are lots of ways to do things in AIM. I have always found it best however to forget everything I learned from other programming and database environments (well almost everything) and focus on the the business need and create rules to meet those needs.

OK - so consider a set of marbles. Each marble is assigned to a particular color. I would like to be able to allow the user to select a color that then shows each marble along with each person that has that type of marble and their respective comments about that marble. They could then 'page' or 'traverse' through the various instances viewing the marble color and the people that have commented on them and click on the people that have commented on them to see their comments.

I originally had the colors in a separate BO. I had a query that listed the colors and an operation that performed a View Object when the color was clicked. However that approach results in multiple drill downs - e.g. select color, select marble, then can you page through. Instead would like the user to select the color and then begin paging through the various marbles and associated owners.

Ok, so I would still have the colours in a separate BO if only so you can add new colours in the future. Marbles.Colour could be a dynamic choice list based on the Colours.BO
Marble -> Colour (one to one)
Marble -> CustMarbleOwned <- Customers

CustMarbleOwned would contain the customer comments so that one customer could own many marbles and one marble could have many customers.

To search for all the comments about a particular marble.

FIND CustMarbleOwned Where CustMarbleOwned.Marble.Colour= 'Red'
Use info in other posts to traverse the list

OK tried that and I think we may have made a break thru - yes unlearning the DB way of thinking seems to be the key (albeit will take practice).

So one more thing - the FIND is showing all Reds for example. However what I'd like to do is to present only one 'Red' link that the user can select/click on and then that shows the comments.

BTW traversing is working now! If only the above can be solved we'll have a bingo!

To the FIND statement, add ORDER BY [created date if you are storing that] ASC OR DESC depending on which order you want the users to review, and finally TAKE BEST 1

Then your VIEW statement

For info, TAKE BEST 1 will grab the first record in the ordered list and put it into context on its own
