Self-register best practice?

Hi all,
Working on how to let users self-register and I have read the documentation but can´t really test it (logonguest doesn´t work in testmode) and i thought i´d ask what the best practice is + if there are things one should think about etc.

This is what I want to do:

User press "Register" on my site
Guest / Register VP is displayed with self-register form (nothing else)
The user type in personal details
The system automatically populate "MembershipStatus" attribute with value "Inactive"
The system runs PayPal subscription process which takes the user to PayPal
The user register their info at PayPal and goes back to the application
The system change MembershipStatus" attribute to value "Active"
The system displays VP "X"

Thought, ideas, tips on how to achieve this in the best way? Thanks in advance.

If registration includes an email address, I suggest sending an email with an encrypted link to confirm the ownership of the email account. Some sort of status flag should be set accordingly.

Henrik, why aren't you using Stripe?

My suggestion is, have user fill out a request form that gets stored in a separate BSV and database. Once internal staff approve the request, then gets transferred to your live database as new user which will send them a link to Paypal/Stripe.
I rather not open live database for user to create themselves.

I am using Stripe (this is an old post) but haven´t had time to fully build / integrate it yet. This is still interesting though and Ben, Mark and Rod who has already integrated Stripe (or others using other solutions) could possibly look at my original post, revise/update so we get an updated best practise guideline about this?

Your approach is logic and I'm agree with you.
