Advice on How to PLan and INtegrate Existing System

Hi all,
I'bve been task to develop a new web app which need to integrate with existing production database. The production system is being developed using normal php. All user record and authentication is captured in the db.

I am looking on advice on what is the best plan/approach to develop awareim app which need to integrate with existing system.

My concerns are:

how is security setup
How is mapping of BO and its relation to the existing table in current db
Any other gotcha which I need to be concern with

I would start by creating the Tables on AwareIM by using the external database connection. Once created you can convert them to BO's and start developing.
