How does one upgrade?

I have the new version with the new product key but what I want to know is, do I need to do a backup of everything? Will 5.7 simply overwrite 5.6, keeping the database?

But seriously, best practice is to always back up everything in a production environment because, well... shit happens. I use Dropbox + some sql scripts to automate nightly the process and just export the bsv for any published versions.

Ok, because mine is sitting on our non-graphical Linux server. We had someone install it for us and he's gone now so it's up to me to upgrade. If I install 5.7, in a perfect world, would everything still be there? Like upgrading my Wordpress?

Yes. But any changes to Tomcat or AwareIM settings will be reverted. This includes settings for session timeout and (I think) memory settings within the AwareIM Control Panel.

If you are running https with a cert, there are certainly many changes that must have been made.

It certainly won't hurt your database. Going from 5.6 to 5.7 should be pretty painless but certainly backup the database. Just cuz.

I would tar up all the files that were applicable to your production environment, are you still running derby or mysql?

To backup the AwareIM instance i would issue the following command.

tar cf /path/of/awareIM backup.tar.gz
(gathers up all the files and compresses it into a neat archive)

To backup a mysql database i would issue the following command.

mysqldump -u root -p BASDB > BASDB.sql
mysqldump -u root -p BASDBTEST > BASDBTEST.sql

(Dumps out the entire SQL structure and data. This command will need a password for the admin user.)

then start the upgrade procedure.

Thanks guys, I can find plenty on installing, not much on upgrading.

I'm on mysql, so I'll ask our server admin to do that backup.

Heck, I'll get server admin to do it all.
