I realise there is tons of information on the web, but I was wondering if anyone has some experience with this using Aware & can point me in the right direction.

AwareIM does not do this as it is totally web based. However using a different mindset, an aware web based app almost has the look and feel of a native app.In fact if you set the home screen button correctly you would not know the difference.

I dont think awareim will ever be able to go remote or native because it relies on a rules engine and that would be cumbersome to offload onto the device

If there is a requirement to hook into the features of the phone, then it is possible to create a native app using one of the many platforms out there and then encapsulate the awareim web interface into the native app. So the native app would basically serve as a framework for the awareim app to run in.

If anyone is interested in going down this road I am keen to pitch in, a basic generic native app that can make calls to an awareim service would really be good - I am thinking gps positioning,calender, contacts , alerts, etc etc

Yes, basically a framework or a wrapper of sorts to enclose the awaraim app so it can be downloaded or purchased from the appstore.

I will take a look at Apache Cordova and PhoneGap which seem to do this.

I would be interested in this too. More and more customers are annoying me for native apps. Some have valid reasons to want it too.

Have a look at ApplicationCraft I considered using this to build native app and then connect it into aware, was beyond my abilities.

What kind of features would be required in the native app ?

Here are some basic ones to start out with with some additional requirements

A very generic framework that acts as a front end to awareim and will let a developer customize the app with its exclusive branding
The developer of the native app must make available the development environment so any awareim dev pitch in member can take over the final developer environment and handle the branding and publish process. So a third party specialist dev is contracted to do this right from the start. (This will allow a project to be kickstarted with expertise and allow an Aim developer to fork the project and go off in his own direction if he so wishes to)
The most basic form of a Native app would be something that just sets up the Home button and when clicked makes a connection to your awareim apps mobile web application. In this very basic version there could be a settings tab where the password is stored for auto login and also the option of adding new business space urls and log in criteria. This would let the app become multifunctional so the user can connect to more than one app from one native app (or alternativley publish a new app for the second application by way of the core you have access to)
A more advanced version would be adding things like Alerts, so if there is an Alert in your AIM application then it is mirrored to your Native app by either a PUSH mechanism or have the Native app poll the Aim application from time to time and then store the alert locally for future prompts and url link back to the source object form in Aim mobile. The sames goes for appointments and tasks . The native app could update the phones calendar and tasks. (although i am not sure if apple devices allow access to their calendar yet)
Moving on to other features, geolocation would be nice.... any other suggestions or concepts out there

If we can get a small team of interested parties to pitch and seek out a freelance developer who specialises in our chosen platform (there are many out there) then we can do this and build a really powerful solution

I am leaning towards Phonegap as the platform, any other suggestion would be welcome

The main IDE I have looked at is Mobione (see posts above) which is a WYSIWYG IDE for developing smartphone apps (IOS/Android). Mobione is built on the Cordova/PhoneGap framework and fully support e.g. smartphone features like GPS,camera,local storage etc. (some custom programming is required to get the these features working in the app). I have found Mobione to be a very easy to use and powerful IDE. Mobione also supports programming e.g. javascript. html/5 etc.

When it comes to Mobione-Aware IM integration I have mainly looked at using Mobione as a Aware IM mobile application launcher (see one of the posts above for more details) and that would mean getting Mobione to create a "installer" file for a smartphone which installs on the smartphone, creates a app icon + app splashscreen and after that enables the user to launch the Aware IM mobile application from the users homescreen. This works and makes the Aware IM mobile application look much more professional.
I think though that it´s possible to create a much more advanced integration between Mobione and Aware IM and to mention one of the things I have thought about (not 100% sure if its possible). In Aware IM it is possible to e.g. create a custom javascript form (custom queries/presentations too?) and use that as a form for Aware IM data. In Mobione it is possible to create a custom form with custom javascript to do x and wouldn´t it then be possible to create a custom javascript form in Mobione and call Aware IM data? I don´t know if this is possible and I am a javascript newbie but someone who knows javascript could possible chip in with thoughts.

When it comes to the idea discussed in this thread of getting outside work done to create a integration, I think a better idea is to talk to Awaresoft about further enhancing the existing mobile capabilities. The Aware IM mobile platform is if I am not mistaking built with/on Sencha touch and it is possible to do all of the "wanted/asked for" features with Sencha touch (e.g. GPS, camera, branding, native build etc.) and getting these more advanced features directly in Aware IM would be ideal. Awaresoft could possible provide some thoughts on this/what's possible?

One of the problems of developing all the functionality or attempting to have all the functionality in the Aware is that you always have to be logged in to your app which is not practical.

A Native app as described will let you have a remote offline front end to your Awareim app which takes care of all the things offline eg: Alerts, Geolocation,Acceleration, maybe an offline database etc etc.

Also it seems that Apple do not approve a pure site launcher app. So the app must have sufficient native functionality for it to get through the approval process

I think there are plenty of basic launcher apps already out there already.

As long as you can use some native functionality like Push Notifications and Use Current Location, and your app adheres to the design guidelines, I don't see any major obstacles.

Example, if nlarson was to offer his versegoal app for download from the appstore, he shouldn't have to re-develop the whole app and make it fully native. As long as he has developed a mobile version of the app with AwareIM and then used PhoneGap to enclose it, the app will be fully functional.

Displaying the 'Get From' appstore and google play logos on your site would only give any app more credibility.

I wonder how viable it would be to develop this with PhoneGap.

I wish Aware would do mobile native app capabilities. Offline support would be great too. I think that would require porting the rule engine to javascript or dart.

This would be the holy grail. You wouldn't need anything else but Aware.

I think, The apps for everyone, and we mean it. Anyone with content to share can make an app for an easy and effective way of reaching their audience.
