I've read the How To document about registering but cannot line up any of the items in the AwareIm manual with Google's interface. Google talks about projects, API access etc whereas the AwareIm manual talks about applications, redirecting URL, client id's etc.

Can someone or support redo the How To Manual in easy steps so a novice in this area such as me can set this up by aligning the two groups of terminology?

You need to register in order to get Google API access - go to their application console at https://code.google.com/apis/console and follow the required steps. At the end of the process you will be given the client ID and client secret.

You will need to provide these two values to Aware IM.

As part of the process you will also be asked to provide redirect URI. It is important that you specify the URI mentioned in the How To document.

You will also need to enable access to the Google calendar API as part of the process.

Ok got it to work in sending to Google calendar. Not to be too critical but I had ready this and found it not hepful. Eventually I stumbled through the Google interface and found where I had to enter stuff. I think the documentation terminology could be reworked but that's me. others may find it quite straight forward.

Question is: Is there any way to automate the process via a process with the user storing their Google account credentials? If not is this being considered?

Very important. End users DO NOT NEED to go through this process and register their application unless you really want them to. You only need to do it yourself as a developer. End users will just allow your application access to their Google account.

Regarding the new google calendar sync option, can the user after syncing their calendars save their credentials so they don´t have to do enter them every time?

What I was alluding to and obviously not very well was that in the calendar a user needs to manually activate the sync process. I would think that users will forget to do this. Is a developer going to be able to sync via a process? Am I missing something here?
