default values for search form?

Is there any way to specify a default value when a users runs a query which uses a form to provide the values? For the vast majority of search functions in my app users are looking for 'active' records. I am hoping to allow that as a default which can be overridden if desired.

Not in the search forms. The only workaround is to create a temporary object to use as a front end for search, but it's not quite the same in functionality as search forms
