Day of week in Date attribute formatting

I'm trying to display a Date type attribute like this:

Wed, Apr 4

I have "Apr 4" working using format: MMM d

Does anyone know if it's possible to get the "Wed" portion to show without using DAY_OF_WEEK function?

I tried using ddd to represent the day of week thinking that this list might help:
