What is the Session Time Out set to in an Aware Application and can it be changed ?

One thing to note here. There are two places where time out is specified. One is BASServer.props file (SessionTimeout property) and another one is in webapps.props (also SessionTimeout property) - this file is located in AwareIM/Tomcat/webapps/AwareIM directory.

The former controls when sessions are timed out in the Aware IM server. And the latter one controls timeout of Tomcat. You are probably better off setting the same value to both properties.

I have not changed anything from the default AwareIM installation:

Webapp.props has: SessionTimeout=1800
BASServer.props has: SessionTimeout=3600000

Are you suggesting that BOTH should be set to 3600000 for the logout to be 1 hour?

Just an update on this: Following a AwareIM update you can now set the Timeout in the Control Panel under the Settings tab. If you set it here then there is no need to adjust these config files manually, they will get adjusted for you when you restart aware.

Also, if you are adjusting manually, note there is a difference between the BASServer.props and webapps.props file, for example:

60 minutes timeout (set in Control Panel) will result in 3600000 in BASServer.props and 3600 in webapps.props

I think (but can't be 100% certain) we caused some system instability because we were playing around with these figures in a way that was incompatible with each other - be warned.
