Copy attribute of one BO to another

I am writing a target setting system and I wish to say to users that "You may choose a target from a target bank, adjust an existing one or create your own". Now I just have to get Aware to do this!

To do this I have

BOTargetSheet

attrName - PLAIN - Eg. Fred Blogs
attrOverallgoal - PLAIN - Eg. Improve stamina for a marathon
attrTargets - BOTargetLines(s) - One or more of example below

BOTargetLine

attrTarget - PLAIN - Run 2km in under 10 minutes
attrGoalDate - DATE - 10/10/2011
attrAchievedDate - DATE - 3/10/2011

BOTarget
-attrTargetType - PLAIN - Fitness and Stamina Training

attrTargetAudience - PLAIN - Adult
attrTarget - PLAIN - Run X km in under Y minutes

So, RATHER than link BOTarget to BOTargetLine I'd like the user (a personal trainer) to browse and use the search filters target type, target audience to find a suitable target. In this case "Run X km in under Y minutes". When they select this I want BOTarget.attrTarget to copy into BOTargetLine.attrTarget whereupon they are free to use the keyboard to edit the values of x and y.

I'd like to do it this way because if one personal trainer changed a target in BOTarget they'd inadvertently change it for everyone else.

If no target is found which is suitable I'd like the ability to add one but that's as simple as putting an add button on the BOTargets and then selecting it.

Any nudges in the right direction would be appreciated. I'm not sure how I get two BO's in context.

It sounds like BOTargetLine will be owned by a particular user once they are created. You should be able to use PROTECT to ensure that only the owner of the target can edit it.

You should be able to use DUPLICATE action to make the new instance of hte selected target. See the User Guide for details.

Hi, BOTargetLine will be owned by BOTargetsheet. BOTargets is a third BO which acts as a searchable target bank so it has extra attributes such as target type, etc. Image a purchase order system. PO is my targetheet, Lineitem is my targetline, products is my targets. But I only want the descriptor of target to copy to targetline so it may be subtly adjusted. Once you have two BOs in context, you use THIS and THAT prefixes to copy attribute contents from one to the other.

Good day.

Image a purchase order system. PO is my targetheet, Lineitem is my targetline, products is my targets. But I only want the descriptor of target to copy to targetline so it may be subtly adjusted. I dont know how to copy the text from one bo to another.

I shared what I did.
I create a Product Pick Up List. When the user select the Product:
Create LineItem with
LineItem.MyProductID=Product
LineItem.MyPOHeaderID=POHeader
LineItem.Description=Product.Description
LineItem.ListPrice=Product.ListPrice

View LineItem Form.....

Now the description show the product description...

With the help provided I thought I had this sorted but apparently not 🙁

BOTargetSheet has a process called AddTargetToSheet as follows

PICK FROM Targets 'Targets is query based on BOTargets
DISPLAY MESSAGE BOTargets.Target 'Debugging that correct target is in context
DISPLAY MESSAGE BOTargetSheet.Title 'Debugging to show correct Target sheet is in context
CREATE BOTargetLine FOR EACH BOTargetSheet WITH BOTargetLine.Target='Test foo target' 'Literal was BOTargets.Target

This worked with no errors and although I've learnt to use the logger now the logic isn't working as I'd expect. The BOTargetLine are being created but are not appearing on any BOTargetSheet. If I do a query search I can see they all BOTargetLines exist but in query view I can't specify the TargetSheet attribute so I don't know if they have one or the wrong one. I thought the correct one would be inserted by Aware because the FOR EACH works for each relevant object in context? And my debugging shows the correct Targetsheet is in context?

I know it's going to be a simple mistake on my behalf but for the time being I'm close to sobbing with frustration!

Have you tried splitting up the PICK FROM and CREATE and put them in different processes.

Hi Tom,

I tried splitting it but that didn't seem to help. I have discovered that BOTargetLine did not have the referencing attribute TargetSheet set to "Must be provided" Now that I have enforced this I get an error:

"Value of TargetSheet must be provided". I'm even more confused now because so far as I can tell the value is in context. I call the process from BOTargetSheet and the process has BOTargetSheet as input. My debugging line DISPLAY MESSAGE BOTargetSheet.Title seems to show that the BOTargetSheet is in context.

Does my CREATE statement need a WITH BOTargetLine.TargetSheet=BOTargetSheet.ID to give the referencing attribute a value? I didn't think it would.

try leaving off the .ID:
WITH BOTargetLine.TargetSheet=BOTargetSheet

Got there in the end thanks guys, I was expecting too much of Aware (a first!) Here is the correct line:

CREATE BOTargetLine FOR EACH BOTargetSheet WHERE BOTargetLine.OnSheet=BOTargetSheet, BOTargetLine.Target=BOTargets.Target.

So I simply missed creating the value of the relatipnship link. I now notice one of the examples given to me early on was right and I missed it. I really did think the primary relatinoship would be created by the CREATE x FOR y automatically.
