If you are referring to the tomcat/web apps/aware folder, the items you refer to are created when a user loads a page which uswes a custom presentation. Tomcat seems to create a copy in order to render the page. Over time they can consume vast quantities of disc space. I'm sure Support told me ages ago that they can be deleted, in fact they shouldn't be retained at all. The fact that they are there might indicate a permissions problem on that folder.
Documents and images are stored as blobs in the database and require no external files in order to restore a database.
However, there is a very good post of Tom's on the forum which describes a technique for uploading docs to a folder, uSing Aware to manage storage and retrieval. There are also a number of posts describing the possible dangers of storing lots of very large blobs in a database.
