creating a data clean-up process

Hi, I am trying to create a process which will go through my entire system and auto-populate a new attribute. For example:

If Bo.ShortTitle is undefined, then BO.ShortTitle=ThisBO.Title truncated to first 20 Chars.

Two questions on this:

Is there a truncate function or if I make the short title only 20 chars will that happen automatically?
How do I get a process to affect all records, so far I've only figured out how to do one at a time. I was hoping to run this one-time in the background then remove it.

Here's a process I used to populate a new attribute in 17K+ records. NameLine is the new attribute, Deleted is a flag for inactive records.

Set_NameBlock

FIND NSCPers WHERE(NSCPers.Deleted IS UNDEFINED AND NSCPers.NameLine IS UNDEFINed)In Batches of 50

Con_Name

Con_Name is a separate process called to populate NameLine. It concatenates 4 attributes of name elements into one to use in an HTML tag on a form.

"Batches of 50" worked best. The default of 1000 always failed after 4 or 5 batches processed.

Also I've found that if the attribute is too short it does truncate and you will get log messages to that effect.
