I'm looking a replacing some client server desktop applications but they need to connect to their own local hardware devices. This is not possible with a browser based app, software needs to be installed on the local machine.

Installing an AwareIM runtime license on each machine so that the application can talk directly to the hardware would be come a large chunk of the License fee.

Any thoughts on either how the licensing could work for this or another way the device on the local machine could be accessed by the browser (addons, widgets etc.)

The standard approach to this in the browser-based world is to write a Java applet or an Active-X control that would talk to the local hardware. The applet or Active-X can be developed outside of Aware IM and then embedded into an Aware IM form.
