Best server deployment

Just doing an eval of AwareIM for an extranet application - I see various problem reports for various VPS configs - does anyone have any recommendations for a reliable VPS or do we have to go full dedicated hardware.

My other deployments on other systems cope mostly OK except for the disk IO - anything in memory that doesn't need to calculate Pi to 100 decimals returns quickly, anything that reads lots of records from disk drags its heels. So I'm mindful that many records in mySQL isn't going to be processed that quickly on a VPS.

Any recommendations based on real life deployments?

I am running an application on a VPS that has most of the same implementations found in the AwareIM example apps. My database at this point is small and manageable. My only scalability concern at this point is the database and should the db grow to a significant size, working with it on a VPS may be an issue. For now, VPS is the most cost effective thing for me. I'm running Windows 2008 server R2, MySql.
