"AwareIM for Dummies" .. would like your ideas

Hi All,

I am teaching a high school computer programming class & teaching them AwareIM.

I would love to hear from current users about their list of items that would be very helpful to know if you are a new user. For now, this list should only be AwareIM related & not database / DB connection oriented.

As detailed as possible would be VERY helpful. Sequential (topics that builds on previous topics) would be a bonus.

I will do my best to summarize & share some of the results with future users.

PS .. not implying my class is "Dummies" at all .. quite the contrary!

They have been working through team mind mapping & conceptual design steps as a like pros, even though it's the first experience for all 7 of them.

Hello!

Ive been a user of AwareIm for like 5 months now. Honestly, I like it very, very much.

It is very easy to use, and Im thank full with Vladimir for his patience while asking questions about AwareIM.

In my personal opinion, I think AwareIm would be a better solution if:
1.- They would have a larger comunity, so more people could be working with the application, and share their knowledge.

2.- Have third party solutions, or plug-ins. I feel that there are many things that are basic for development and AwareIM does not includes it. And to find someone to do it is a long long process. (Expensive too)

3.- I come from a Microsoft Access / SQL background and you can find tons of fixes, add on, plug ins, and info, to make your application in less time. Here you just have to be pacient.

Some of the most basic functions are kind of tricky. Like duplicating a record.

I still have some doubts about in how to develop an account payable module.

Also, would be great to have access to more bsv files, not just from AwareIm, but from many other users and see how they make things in AwareIM.

At the end, to me AwareIm is a GREAT software, easy to use, and hopefully this comunity can grow faster. Im kind of doing my part, Asking and sharing my codes and also asking for support. Hope they take the best out of every post and add it to the next version.

The first concept for an AwareIM user, regardless of their background, is to learn to think in the real world and in the terms used in AwareIM, Business Objects, Attributes, Relationships. This is key.

I think AwareIM bridges a gap between the business process engineer and the developer - both can speak the same language and collaborate to build a useful application. I think it makes the developer think more in the terms that the BP Engineer would use.

The second concept is how AwareIM abstracts the database. To me, this removes a whole process of converting my business needs to a database schema. By not thinking about the data schema, I can focus on the business requirements.

Next, while AwareIM has many capabilities, I think its target use to build business application. I am a long time Clarion developer and it is a similar tool desktop application development.

Lastly, I'm sure I could do some really neat stuff if I new anything at all about Java. That's a good skill period, and a very compatible skill for an AwareIM developer.

A good place to start is with the existing "How To" list. Instead of just linking to the circuitous User Guide documentation add some concrete coding examples.

Then you should add some graphic illustrations of how to use the configuration editors, particularly the "Visual Perspective" editor. For instance, I still don't know why I have un select all the choices under "Frames" and then un click the "Left" radio box under frames then click it on again to get the "Menu" radio button and the "Settings" button to activate. Since that is the "basic no frills menu system" one would think that would be the default for the novice user. I only found that out through trial and error removing all the defaults under "Frames" and trying each one to see what happens.
