Complex Calculation

Hi I hope someone can help me with this calculation:

I have a App with a BO call Payment and Invoice
I can receive Multiple payments for an Invoice and I can also Apply Payment to Multiple Invoices at the same time.

The problem I am have is for example:
I select 4 Invoices for a Client with different Total:

Invoice 1 = 2500
Invoice 2 = 3000
Invoice 3 = 50
Invoice 4 = 200

I begin my Payment Transaction with all 4 invoices selected and the Client send a payment of $3000.

I apply the payment the issue I am having here is I have some invoices with Invoice Total less than the payment receive, How can I apply this payment to all invoices without any negative amount. If I divide the Payment equally by the number of Invoices when the Payment Receive is more than the Invoice with the smallest amount I will get a negative.

Can someone help me with a Logic or something that will lead me in the best way to perform this calculation?

From an accounting point of view, it's dangerous to say that you want to design a system that does not allow for payment over the invoice amount.

Normally in a Cash Receipts application, you simply allow the data entry person to key in the information from the customer's remittance advice ... the invoice #'s and payment amounts. In most cases the payment amount should equal the invoice amount, but don't you want to allow the possibility for a customer to overpay an invoice?

The problem I am having is how to apply the payment made to each individual invoice so the correct balance can be made for the invoice especially when there are invoices where the amount paid is less then the invoice Total. Review my first Post again to get a clearer understanding of what I want to accomplish.

What rules do you want to use during the payment application? You don't specify that in your scenario. Are you looking to apply cash first to the oldest invoices?

I have not create a rule as yet. What I want to do is apply the payment to the invoice with where the invoice total is =< the amount been paid, if the invoice total is less that the amount been paid I want it apply to the invoice the apply the remaining amount to the rest of the invoice equally.

But I don't know where to start or what scenario I should use to implement this.
