Would you use Derby Database for production?

A few question for other members add/or Aware IM Team!

*) Would you use Derby for production? If yes, what would you limit the # of records per table before you run to limit?

*) What would be your next choice after Derby?

*) For the large volume, would you use SQL2008?

*) Since Aware IM runs on Windows server or Linux Server, Which one would you use for serving Internet based app?

I would not use Derby for production apps unless the app has a very modest utility. No facts to back that up, but there are some limitations there. One very simple one is that queries are case sensitive, which is a bother. And it's not scalable that I know of.

My next choice WAS MySQL. If you're using Aware IM right out of the box, I'm hard pressed to think of any advantages of MSSQL over MySQL. Of course, if you have an existing database somewhere, that may set your course.

SQL2008, no clue there.

I'm using a Windows server because it's more familiar to me. If you want to push out MS Word or MS Excel documents, you will need a Windows server.

I'm reading the user guide now and blown away how powerful this product is.

Is there a way to create a "Global" variable in the Business space that all programs can access it? For example, when an Employee logs in, every employee is attached to a company. I need to get that Company ID and store it Globally for that employee, so when she is accessing or creating data, it's always matching for that CompanyID.

Secondly, does Aware IM have a function to return a GUID id?

2 places to store Global variables:
a) System Settings BO .. attributes to be used by ALL users

b) RegularUser BO .. attributes for ONE user .. refer to LoggedInRegularUser to store + retrieve info for the current user.

For example, when a new user is created, the CompanyID can be stored in that user's RegularUser record & then retrieved during one of their sessions by referred to LoggedInRegularUser.CompanyID.

Thanks for the Global answer.

The Guid Id is "A globally unique identifier" which is used when you need to have a globally unique id generated. SQL2008 can do it for you automatically or in .Net, there a method call to generate that for you.
Here is a sample:
{21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D}
This way I can assign that to my Company ID rather using a sequential number.

Assuming Employee BO is a member of SystemUser group, you do NOT need to capture Employee.CompanyID & store it with a Login notification.

ALL attributes os Employee BO are accessible during the entire session ... ie LoggedInEmployee.CompanyID

And after the EmployeeID is stored and employee does a Query on the items with Red Color I can say:

Find all the items that it's color is Red and it's companyID is equal to GlobalCompanyID. And it will only find items for this company that are red.

Use: FIND Item WHERE Item.CompanyID=LoggedInEmployee.CompanyID AND Item.Color='Red'

Excellent Tom. Yes, the Employee will be part of the SytemUser group. It's good to know that, this Object remains as active during the session.
