URL in new Tab - not

I've noticed that the menu items that are set to display a URL with New Tab as the target display within the application frame but fail to display a tab. Is this just me?

Actually, it works fine on my development server but the non-tab display occurs on my production server. Production server is Win 2008 Data Center. Dev server is Win XP.

Wow, in actuality, no items are creating tabs. Same BSV as on dev machine.

Thanks Tom. I can tell you for certain that on my production site the system is not producing tabs other than for the Home page. All menu items that would normally spawn a tab, do not do so. Again, works fine on my dev system.

My dev system uses a Professional license and my production system uses a Developer license. Only other real difference would be the existence of a site certificate and application folder name change on the production server. I tried restarting the Aware system servers, no good, then rebooted the server itself, still no good.

Any suggestions? Should I reinstall AwareIM?

I wonder if someone else that has changed the application folder name could test.

I can't say for certain but I don't recall seeing this until after the 4.95 install.

Well, this is not a pretty thing. Really need to find a fix. Now accepting any thoughts on a way out of this pickle.

Have tried:

Reinstalling AwareIM
Increasing AwareIM server memory
Restarting the server
Re-uploading the BSV known to work on my dev server

It just keeps on not displaying new tabs for anything called from the menu. It does create a tab when selecting an object from a query.

Stumped and in need of suggestions....

Some ideas:

1) Your application needs to have at least one tab before it can spawn others. Does it have one?
2) Have you tried other browsers?
3) Have you checked the output of Tomcat/Aware IM Server?

If all else fails please pay for the support ticket and send us the BSV.

1) Yes, the application starts with the Home tab displayed and will redisplay that tab when the home page item is selected.

2) Yes, I've tried other browsers on other computers. None display new tabs.

3) I have looked at the Aware server log but I don't see anything useful there. I have not looked at the Tomcat log, will do so.

I will fledge a while longer then likely submit the ticket.

Your BSV works fine on our system (at least, the Administrator perspective).

Are you sure you are running the same BSV on your production system? Please double check that the targets for the menu items in your production BSV are "New Tab". Maybe they have been changed to "Default"...

Yes. I can verify that I'm running the same BSV.
I can also verify that all menu items have New Tab as their target.
It's interesting that when a menu item is launched, regardless of what is being displayed in the right pane, the pane is cleared and the item is displayed with no tab.

All of the perspectives with a menu system exhibit this behavior.

I can't say for certain, but I may have cross-installed by license on this server. I have a Professional license for this server and I noticed a SETUP.EXE and a SETUPVAR.exe file in my downloads. I have verified that the license currently says Professional but I can't rule out that I may have installed the Developer license here. But I wouldn't think that could be at the root of this.

Perhaps there are some component files that I can throw out and then reinstall AwareIM?

If you would like to log into the production system and see this behavior, let me know. That's not a problem.

Have you tried to refresh the browser? It could be just a browser caching issue after update.

The license shouldn't matter for this issue. The problem can only be in the AwareIM/Tomcat/webapps/AwareIM/aware_ext/aware.js file. This file should be in sync with the server version. You may try installing the same version of Aware IM that is running on your production server into a separate folder and then compare the aware.js files from both installations. If they are different you have a problem. If you have a browser caching issue the files could be the same, but the browser may be using the old file...

Yes, the problem appears regardless of the client computer/browser. If I just walk up to a computer that has never been to my production site, I see this behavior.

The aware.js file on both development and production servers bear the same file size and Date Modified time stamp, so in that respect, they are in sync.

I'm onto something here. Every time I update AwareIM on my server, I run the following batch file:

Rename C:\AwareIM\Tomcat\webapps\AwareIM a
Copy aware.js C:\AwareIM\Tomcat\webapps\a\aware_ext
Copy UIConfig.props C:\AwareIM\bin
Copy web.xml C:\AwareIM\Tomcat\webapps\a\WEB-INF
Copy server.xml C:\AwareIm\Tomcat\conf

This has something to do with my site certificate. The premise for this is found in the following forum:

So I believe I need to do a search & replace on the aware.js file. I guess that this file changed in the recent release and I need start from a more recent version?

Okay, this is resolved. Because you pointed me to the aware.js file, I realized that this file was being modified to support changes needed that relate to having a site certificate installed. You will note from the forum post referenced above, that you (support) advise to do a search and replace within aware.js to change a directory name when changed from webapps\AwareIM to something else. I'm not assessing blame - just keeping the record. I need to note that it may be necessary to modify this file upon a new AwareIM release.

I am happy that this is resolved.

Support, as your final contribution, can you evaluate what happened here, and what I did to resolve it, and verify that my resolution logically fits the symptoms of this problem? My modified aware.js file was being kept in a static location and copied over the file after update installation. This has worked fine for several updates but I think 4.94 was a bit different.

When you inquired about the consistency of aware.js across both of my servers, they were the same because we were looking in the AwareIM app folder as opposed to the new folder (\a on my server). I should have caught that.

Glad to hear that you have resolved this.

You cannot just copy your version of aware.js file and overwrite the system's file - at least, not after the update. This file is 99% likely to be changed with every new Aware IM build (!), let alone minor or major release. So if you update to a new Aware IM build you need to repeat the changes in the new file. A bit of pain, I know, but this is the way it is at the moment - we'll try to do something about it in the future.
