Update field when LoginName changes

I have a BO called Person that has an email attribute.
I am trying to use the persons EMail address as the LoginName attribute, so I have the Rule

If Person.LoginName WAS CHANGED  OR Person IS NEW Then 
Person.EMail=Person.LoginName

but it doesn't want to work for me. So when I add a new user, I put the email address in the LoginName text box and create the record, but the EMail attribute never gets loaded, either when I add a new Person or change the LoginName on an existing one. I'm sure I'm doing something simple as I'm fairly new to Aware.\

Try making the LoginName a Calculated field. No need for it to appear on the form. Then, in the rules for the object, make a rule that equates the LoginName to the email address.

I actually had tried that, but I went back and put the rule in again in the Person Rules, and it now seems to work.
