Tried to do as you suggested and it only works when I set the the rule to assign the LineItem.ReturnDate to the CURRENT_DATE like this:
If LineItem IS NEW AND LineItem.ReturnDate IS UNDEFINED Then
LineItem.ReturnDate=CURRENT_DATE
If I change the rule to set the ReturnDate equal to the parent's (Transfer) DefaultReturnDate the new LineItem is added but its ReturnDate attribute is blank - even when the DefaulReturnDate has a value and the Transfer has been saved. Here is the rule that results in a blank LineItem.ReturnDate:
f LineItem IS NEW AND LineItem.ReturnDate IS UNDEFINED Then
LineItem.ReturnDate = LineItem.Transfer.ExpectedReturnDate
I am doing this with the LineItem table set to allow inline editing if that changes things. Also, the Transfer reference in the LineItem BO is set to Owned By with the matching attributes in Transfer set to the Items reference in the Transfer BO. Likewise, the Items reference in the Transfer BO is set to Owner of and the matching attributes in LineItem is the Transfer reference in the LineItem BO. This matches the Ordering example BSV.
