PayPal Cancel_Return

From a process I'm able to calculate a payment amount, connect to PayPal, and make a payment. What I can't figure out or see in the "Library" sample is how to detect whether there was a successful payment when returned to the AwareIM application.

I need to be able to activate memberships on successful payment and not activate if payment is not made.

I have not worked with the PayPal process, but you said you were able to make a payment. How do you know that happened?

I have 'payment' process with three rules. One creates a PayPal parameters instance for the logged on user. Two calculates the required payment amount for new memberships created by the user. Three 'calls' the PayPal service.

In test mode, as a user, I select payment on the user menu and am directed to the PayPal site. I can see the right amount is passed to PayPal and I do the PayPal payment process and click the return to vendor button. The process creates the instances of the object I use to do the amount calculation. That intermediate step is necessary because the PayPal amount parameter is a plain text and I can't just 'SUM' it. That's OK because I need those transactions to keep the accountant happy.

I can see the PayPal payment works and I'm returned the AwareIM application where the payment menu selection is made. I don't have a rule after the 'Request Service' and just follow the library sample which displays a "successful" message regardless. I need to be able to configure some kind of "IF Successful then .... Else IF NOT Successful then ....." rule in the Payment process.

I could just wait for the PayPal email notification and run a process to activate based on the email. But I'd rather automate that process as well.

Have you tested what happens when a payment is not completed properly?

It seems like you have described when PayPal DOES process a payment successfully.

The Library application documentation states for editing the settings for the intelligent object PayPal:

...Then we enter "return" as the name of the parameter indicating the URL to return to if a service has been successful. This is the name of the parameter that PayPal expects .... which contains the URL that PayPal will return to if payment has been successful. We do not have to worry about the URL itself - this is taken care of automatically by AwareIM. Similarly we enter the name of the parameter indicating the URL to return to if service fails - "cancel_return".

Is "cancel_return" also taken care of automatically and if so is the URL different from "return" and how does a developer configure the AwareIM PayPal interface to detect failure?

cancel_return does happen automatically as well - it is handled in the Library app (I believe), so you should do exactly the same thing as in the app.

cancel_return handles the situation when the user cancels the payment and returns to the merchant's page. Failure is handled by PayPal's interface - it will display the error message and will not let the user return unless either payment is successful or the user cancels explicitly.

Rule 'c' executes regardless of whether a payment is made at the PayPal site. If the user takes the 'return to vendor' route without making a payment the Payment.Status is set to 'Applied' and the success message displays. How does the process at point 'c' determine success or failure?

I don't see anywhere or anything in the Library BSV that deals with that contingency.

The PayPal Integration site describes "cancel_return" as follows:

A URL to which the payer’s browser is redirected if payment is cancelled; for example, a URL on your website that displays a “Payment Canceled” page.

Default – The browser is redirected to a PayPal web page.

Question:

The Library sample directs to edit the "URL Channel Settings" for the PayPal object and enter "cancel_return" in the field labeled "Name of the parameter to return to if service fails"

Does AwareIM automatically set "cancel_return" to some URL? If so what and how can an application be configured to use it?

Really need some help on this.

cancel_return is supposed to automatically cancel the process. You don't need to worry about URL etc. However, if it doesn't cancel the process and the actions after REQUEST SERVICE are executed, it's a bug. We'll investigate.

Thank you. I just noticed, in the "PayPal Sandbox" anyway, whether or not I complete a payment, "Applied" is set and the success message displays. A work around would be to just wait for the PayPal email notification and launch a process based on that. I would rather automate it though.

We have tested this in our system using the Library app and everything seems to work properly - the process is cancelled and the status of the payment remains NEW. You must be doing something wrong.

I believe it was a problem with the PayPal Sand Box operation. Now the PayPal session ends and no successful payment message displays. I would like to know how to produce an "unsuccessful message" on a cancel_return.

You cannot do this at the moment - the process is just cancelled without any message.

The credit card in my paypal account is my mothers and I am in the process of adding my new bank account to my paypal account. Just bringing this back to the top of the tree and wondering where the AwareIM team are with making this better.

I have added a membership renewal process to my app which calculates what renewal subscription a member has to pay based on whether they rent hangar space, trailer space, caravans etc. We then give the member a number of options as to how to pay, one of which is online using PayPal. I'm on the verge of abandoning this however for the simple reason, If a member cancels the transaction AFTER they have hit the paypal website, I need to be able to detect this and roll back the membership renewal process which is a fairly complex process. There seems no way I can do this.

Suggestion: Would it be possible in the PayPal settings to call a process when cancel_return is activated. That way we the developers can control every aspect of the cycle

It seems a straightforward request upon returning from the Paypal service call to have one of the PayPalParameters (even if a new one, or "rm") set to report the result or something...

Some of the conversation expressed concern that storage of CC info might compromise PCI standards, but it appeared ultimately to be a non-issue if I read it correctly.

All Customer's & CC's info is transferred to STRIPE Secured Vault. We don't store any vital info in our Aware DB. If you need this solution, contact Rod. He actually organized the whole development and test process to final stage, to helps us rather than trying to sell a product. 😉
You will love the amount of control and speed you get, which very important when dealing with user's CC.
