The attributes of a BO are arranged alphabetically by attribute name in the work space. Does the actual raw data follow that order. For instance if I added attributes "A1", "A2", and "A3" to a BO would they necessarily be physically contiguous if I was looking at the "row" with a hex editor? Or would their position in a row depend on when I added the new attributes?

No, the physical position of the attributes is undefined, nor it should be of any concern to you. The position of attributes in the row depends on the query in which they are used only.
