"Can't get object clsid from progid"

Does anyone know the source of this error? I'm trying to import an MSWord document to use as a template. I select "New", then enter a name, select type as MSWord and select "Import". The browsing window opens and I highlight the MSWord document and select "Open". All is well at that point until either I select "Create" or "Close"/"Save" which are the only two options at that point. Either immediately produces the "Can't get object clsid from progid" error.

Most probable cause is that you don't have MS Word installed on the server.

That's true. Didn't know it was necessary. I was under the impression that MSWord documents could be used as templates. Does that mean that if I want to use a MSWord document as a template for document design Word will be launched in lieu of the standard design work screen? Also, if I use Word documents will end users have to have Word installed locally as well?
