Validation for unique record

Hi,

Can we put validation in the business object's attribute? I guess the uniqueness of each record is represented by attribute ID. But I need another attribute to have a unique value.

This is the case. I have a business object named Apartment contains attributes ApartmentNumber (type Plain Text) and other attributes.

I create one Apartment record, with ApartmentNumber A01 (for example) then when I create another Apartment record, is there any way to check my input for ApartmentNumber (if i enter ApartmentNumber A01 again then the application will tell me that the record with ApartmentNumber A01 is already exist).

If EXISTS Apartment WHERE (Apartment.ApartmentNumber=ThisApartment.ApartmentNumber AND Apartment.ID<>ThisApartment.ID) Then
REPORT ERROR 'Sorry, An apartment already exists with this apartment number'

Hi Pete,

It worked well for checking the existing Apartment record.
Then I applied it for Reservation business object. Reservation has attribute Apartment with type Apartment.

If EXISTS Reservation WHERE (Reservation.Apartment.ApartmentNumber=Reservation.Apartment.ApartmentNumber )
Then REPORT ERROR 'This Apartment has been booked'

But when I create a new Reservation, it always reports error regardless the Reservation record with that Apartment Number has already existed or not.

For example: There is a Reservation record with Apartment Number A01. Then I create a new Reservation for ApartmentNumber B02 (There is not yet any Reservation record with Apartment Number B02 data), but still the application reports error 'This Apartment has been booked'

Did I applied the rule wrongly?

Try this:

If EXISTS Reservation WHERE (Reservation.Apartment=ThisReservation.Apartment AND Reservation.ID<>ThisReservation.ID)
Then REPORT ERROR 'This Apartment has been booked'

Yes, several minutes after posting the question, I realized I haven't put ID attribute.

Now this query works:

If EXISTS Reservation WHERE (Reservation.Apartment =ThisReservation.Apartment AND Reservation.ID<>ThisReservation.ID AND
((ThisReservation.Arrival BETWEEN Reservation.Arrival AND Reservation.Depart) OR (ThisReservation.Depart BETWEEN Reservation.Arrival AND Reservation.Depart))
)
Then REPORT ERROR 'This Apartment has been booked for the selected dates'
