Interaction between business spaces?

This was never part of my master plan, but an incident a few days ago set me thinking, so this post is a "can it be done" and "Where do I start reading" type of post (but any handy hints would be gratefully received)

Suppose long term I had 2 gliding clubs on my server (or maybe separate servers, each with their own Business space and database of members

A member from club 2 comes to visit and fly at club 1, would it be possible for a process in the BS of club 1 to interrogate the BS of club 2 to check that the visitor was indeed a member and what his/her recent training and flying history was?.

Is this a case of setting up one of those SOAP things - of which I know nothing about - or an intelligent business object

I'm pretty sure what you are after can be achieved using Aware's Ajax/XML interface as described commencing page 76 of the Programmers Reference document.

By the looks of many posts on these forums it's not the easiest thing to perfect - but many are trying 🙂

I use BOs from other Business Spaces frequently and have had no issues. I just set them up as Existing External BOs using the ID as the key. BUT I ALWAYS ONLY ALLOW READ access.

Just thought I'd let you know the test went well. I managed to extract data off my working Virtual Private server from my PC via the internet.

This simple test opens up a whole new world of possibilities for future developements

Hi Tom

1) On emote VPS using MySQLAdmin, created a user account with "Select" access to the BasDB schema (as rocketrod said - only want to be able to view data so this is the safest way

2) created a BO in my test space on home PC type = Database existing external

2) in the settings/database entered this user and password as credentials for MySQL account

3) Machine name is the ip address of the remote server

4) Port for MySQL is 3306 but you can leave that blank - it uses the default for the database type you are using

5) Database is BasDB

OK those setting and then type in the table name you want to access - in my case the members table in my main BS

6) "Discover" the attributes and select EXT_ID as the primary key

That's it, you can then create queries/processes etc, design forms/reports etc to view the data on the remote server

It serves my purpose of being able to view a limited amount of data. but it would be dangerous I think to try to manipulate/change the data using this method - but I've just been reading up on Services and intelligent Busines objects as a web service and although the manuals are absolutely rubbish on this topic,I've read enought to see the potential. It will be worth a few days toil to try to get this aspect of AwareIm working. If I crack it - might even be worth making one of my world famous video tutorials on the subject (Just a private joke amongst my members)
