Maintaining Available Inventory Count

Problem.

I have an object "Events" that contains attributes "NumberMaleBerths" and "NumeberFemaleBerths". I have a "many to one" relationship set up between the "Events" object and the "Member" object.

When an instance of the "Member" object is displayed the available events show in a scrolling window and I can attach or remove "Events" to/from a "Member" object.

How can I update the "Number..." attributes as events are attached or removed?

I would create calculated fields on the Member BO and add a rule to count the rows on the Events BO. I am guessing that you have a relationship defined like the following

On MemberBO
MemberEvent of Type Event

on EventBO
MemberEvent of Type Member

IF MemberBO.MemberEvent WAS CHANGED THEN Member.NumMales=COUNT EventsBO WHERE (EventsBO IN MemberBO.MemberEvent)

I am not sure by your post whether you need to count MaleBerths and FemaleBerths separately, but if you did that you can append AND EventBO.Male='Yes' to the WHERE clause and of course you would need to add another calculated attribute to your MemberBO for tracking femaleberths as well as another rule where EventBO.Female='Yes'.

This rule should cover both the addition and deletion of EventBO rows.

Still not quite what I'm after.

Any given "Event" has a finite number of berths for attendees. "Event" objects show in a scrolling window while a member object is displayed:

"RT-VA 06/20/2009 - 07/06/2009 14 Days Male 150 Female 125"

After a member selects an "Event" (there is a gender attribute in the member object) I want the "Event" object to show:

"RT-VA 06/20/2009 - 07/06/2009 14 Days Male 149 Female 125"

How many events a particular member selects is not relevant. What is relevant is to not allow a selection when the available count goes to 0.

I can see how to "Count" line items on an order as in the "orders" sample. How do I trigger the action that will subtract from an attribute that is carrying the number of items currently available when an item is placed on an order?

To trigger the count use following

IF Member WAS ADDED TO Event OR MEMBER WAS REMOVED FROM Event
THEN
Event.AvailMales=Event.TotalMales-(COUNT Member WHERE Members IN Event.Members and Member.Male='Yes')...

That will give you an accurate count of available berths.
