I looked into it a while ago. I had a plan of action in mind and had the AwareIM team provide a quote to facillitate it so you might want to ask them to send you that quote.
I didn't end up doing it because my server at the time was pretty marginal and I was concerned about the drain on resources of a process that would run every few seconds. More recently, I mulled over the idea of using SOAP web services and making a small dedicated bsv that would just handle incoming and outgoing chat messages. I don't know how fast the response time would be for this but it might be something for you to consider.
