Protect Reference Attribute

Is it possible to protect a reference attribute? I tried it using a rule. the rule works for regular attributes but all the reference attributes are not protected.

I have tried searching for this answer on the forum, but can't see this specific question there.

Hi Tom,
Sorry, I am using version 3 and it appears I have been mistaken as usual. the reference attribute doesn't look protected when the form is opened; ie. it is not greyed out and has the select users button there, but if you try and change it, it will not change. SO I would say that it is working, but in a badly presented way. It will do for now.
