List order

I'm sure that this has been previously discussed but in searching the forum I was unable to find anything on it.

I have a BO and would like to allow the user to change their ranking for each record. The list would contain 25 - 30 records and should default to an automatic position in the list when items are entered or a default based on the configuration of the data. Each user would then be able to adjust the rank order of the list. The best would be if they could move records up and down in the list (kind of like how we can change the order of items within the configuration tool).

Any help would be appreciated.

Some randoms thoughts for you:

-- MyList reference BO would be owned by RegularUser & generated in default order by the system at some point.

-- MyList would include an attribute SortOrder.

-- A reference list of MyList could be sorted by sort order and have 2 operations: a + operation that would move it up the list and a - operation that would move it down the list by somehow changing the sort order via a process

Good Ideas Tom,

I need a little nudge in the right direction.

I am running into an issue where when I am increasing a value that another value that is similar I can not identify and reduce.

List Item Sort Order
ABC 1
XYZ 2

An example would be Increasing record ABC then I have 2 records with a Sort Order value of 2. I have tried to identify the XYZ record and reduce it by 1 but have not been successful.

Any thoughts/help would be appreciated.

Try to write a rule to do this:

When + is clicked, the rule would move something from a Sort Order 3 to a Sort Order 2 for example -- where 1 is the "highest" item in the list.

To accomplish this, you would need a process called "MoveUp". You basically want to FIND the next item in the list. The FIND action would be something like:
FIND Stuff WHERE Stuff IN RegularUser.Stuff AND Stuff.SortOrder<ThisStuff.SortOrder TAKE BEST 1

Once that item is found, you need to swap the sort order of the two items.
