varying max length for attributes

Hi,

I would need to set different max. lengths for plain text attributes, depending on the selection of a referenced BO.

An example, we've got 3 attributes, one is a drop-down listing services and the other two are plain text fields where one is initially configured to have a max length of 255 and the other one 4000.

Now depending on the selected service we need to be able to set different max length values.

Is this possible and how could this be achieved ?

This is currently only possible if you define your own custom form and include some Javascript that would handle the maxlength appropriately.

You can try RULE over here, it might works for you..

make plaintxtbox 5000 char max length.

IF service is this and LENGTH(plaintxtbox) < 255 ELSE REPORT ERROR

IF service is this and LENGTH(plaintxtbox) < 4000 ELSE REPORT ERROR

@[deleted]: thanks for the suggestion, but users probably would find it rather annoying that after entering a long text and submitting it, the system comes back with an error message to shorten the text.

So, it must be checked while they enter the text, best would be to have a counter of available chars as well, so they see what's left while they're typing.

I just don't have any clue yet on how to implement a custom form.

One other idea would be to show a dynamic message on the form that would tell the user the length of the input allowed. You could make a special message attribute in the BO & have a dynamic rule that changed the message based on the value of the drop down. This could be used in conjunction with himanshu's suggested REPORT ERROR.
