Hi support, don't worry about it, I have a blind script written in asp I can use.
FYI - IPN is useful if for any reason the PayPal transaction fails the first time around (Servers busy, problem with credit card, not enough funds etc etc. IPN sends a notification (usually to a "blind" script) which can then mark the members account as "Payment Pending".PayPal then periodically retries the transaction over a period of time until the tranaction succeeds or PayPal gives up.
Either way, a notification is sent to the script which can then flag the members record and react accordingly under (my) process control.
It is used mostly when a site DOESN'T send the customer to the Paypal site to complete the transaction but rather, gathers all the necessary data itself and then sends a complete set of name value pairs to PayPal.
This overcomes the problem of users NOT clicking the return to site button on PayPal which in reality - particularly with single item transactions, like a membership renewal - happens more often than not
If you want to have a play, I can send you the script
