Convert a HTML markup field back to plain text

Is there anyway to convert a HTML markup field back to plain text?

Google 'html to text' or copy compiled html through notepad.

I was looking for an aware type function to convert a 'Plain Test' field set set to HTML format which gives the user the ability to bold underline etc.

I then want to use this field to SMS the first 80 characters but it contains all of the HTML markup which I want to strip out before its sent.

The only way I can think of would be REPLACE_PATTERN. If you happen to only be using a limited number of HTML aspects in the attribute, you could make a new Plain Text field and use REPLACE_PATTERN to strip out the HTML for bolding for example.

Thanks Tom I think that is what I might have to do. I found some sample java code that runs a replace on every markup field here
