DateOfBirth - Age Fields

Hi,

For a Contact Management System I will store Date of Birth. Now I also want to display on the form the age of the Contact. Coming from an Access background you never store a calculated field you just calculate it when needed.

How does this work in AwareIM I've had a dig through the Help and found the AGE function to calculate the age from a date.

So.. Should I store both DateOfBirth and Age. If so how do I keep Age uptodate?

Would need a rule for when DateOfBirth is added, edited, and also a scheduled process that runs every day to update age when DateOfBirth=Date, ie they're now a year older.

Is there a simpler way whereby I can just display a calculation on the form? ie. AGE(Member.DateOfBirth)? and only store the DateOfBirth?

Just a niggle I guess, but wander if theres a simple method I've missed to do this? (Can almost see myself chiding myself for missing something so obvious an hour from now) 😉

You can try this (I haven't tried it myself but it should work in theory)

Create a cell of HTML type on the form
Specify the following inside the cell:
<<AGE(Member.DateOfBirth)>>

And you can also add HTML tags here
<font color=red> <<AGE(Member.DateOfBirth)>> </font>

I came from an Access programming background also & getting my mind around rules based processing was the toughest part. I strongly suggest that you spend some time with the sections of the User Guide that explain how rules work & also spend time with the sample applications provided with AwareIM to see some practical examples about how rules are used. It will also explain the concept of Context which is critical to know to "get" rules.

I would store both. You can add a rule: Member.Age=AGE(Member.DateOfBirth)

Note in the configuration tool that it says "Rules (when object is created or modified)".

.. and also a scheduled process that runs every day to update age when DateOfBirth=Date, ie they're now a year older.

This process would include:
1) FIND ALL Member
2) UPDATE Member

This would make trigger all rules for Member BO to fire & recalculate Member.Age.

Thanks for the tips on rules, I'm slowly getting my head round them!

The other bit thats caught me out a few times is the way you double reference a relationship 🙂 but thats starting to make sense now too..

I'll be flying with this in no time! Especially with the great tips you keep providing.
