Latest item in reference list

Hi folks

can anyone advise a nifty way to FIND the last item in a reference list without knowing the specific details of that item?

For instance, I have a BO that has a reference list of transactions which are dated...I want to retrieve the item with the latest date.

the idea is:

FIND Transaction WHERE Transaction in Object.Transactions ORDER BY Transaction.Date DESC TAKE BEST 1
