Confused uploading DocTemplates

I have converted (a copy of) my client runtime installation to 3.0 by generating a new executable and installing it over a copy of their 2.3 runtime install.

Now I have made some further changes and uploaded and autodeployed the bsv OK

I made some changes to documents and just went to upload the DocTemplates directory.

Apart from the fac that it is massive 178MB contains multiple BS not related to the client - the subdirectories have version numbers that dont correlate to my development version eh I am at 50.23 and on the clients box the almost all end on zero and go up to MRT_60.0

How do I proceeed?

You are not supposed to copy directories! If you make a change please re-deploy the application.

Yech! I have always done that and I believe I was instructed by AwareIM support to do so once previously after I had problems with the generated executeable overwriting settings on the target system.

By redeploying the application you mean generating an executeable and uploading the whole 100+ MB file then having enough access to the target server to execute the install package!???

This is not a workable proposition I normally work from home across a satellite link and quite often need to make small changes.

I believe I have suggested previously that AwareIM needs a Publish function for just this issue where only the changed files are ftp'd to the target system.

Make it so Number One ! <grin>

Aware IM does have a remote publish function invoked from a browser - check menu types in the visual perspective editor and have a look at the manual.

Oh and another thing. We need a way of tracking and maintaining customised settings like java memory, timeouts etc so that they dont get overwritten each time an upgrade occurs.

NB AwareIM is advertised as a system that can be used by non technical people but these issues are examples of gotchas that require the configurer to get the "hood up" on a regular basis to prevent things happening like changes mysteriously undoing themselves.

As a general suggestion some significant attention needs to be given to to user friendlyifying the system to meet the non technical claims. (I could wax lyrical about this.)

OK Ive taken a look - but not attempted it as yet as my operational version is out of sync in DocTemplates.

However my understanding is that the menu option to Publish a Business Space Version, loads a new BSV??

Does this then somehow also load any changed ancillary files that are required such as documents and reports??

Documents and Reports are part of your BSV.

Sorry Pete but I beg to differ, external documents such as word docs are not, and I think also reports .rdd files are not as well.

That is how this problem began when I exported a bsv from my config and imported it into a clients runtime version and voila! no new documents - in fact I just get the document selection dialog even though old versions of the documents exist.

I would love to be proven wrong but.
Maybe AwareIM support can shed some light.

Sorry, I guess that working with runtime executables must be different than standard deployment on my server. Sorry about that.

Pete is right - documents and reports are part of the BSV file. I don't know why it didn't work for you before - maybe you were doing something wrong.

Further to documents apparently not uploading to the Runtime server I have tried the web based upload -it logged me out after the upload so I assume updated the version - but no change.
I have shutdown and restarted the runtime server - no change.

Then I went looking at the nature of the changes I have been making.

I have found that when I have edited changes to a RTF document stored as a text template, they may not be saved in AwareIM even though there is no error displayed.

I did note curious behavior when saving the Document/Repprt dialog - Save worked OK, Close did not close.
If I made changes and did not save but just closed, then Close would prompt to Save and not close.

However I assumed it had save but now when looking in the logs I found this error

Operation error. Error accessing MSWord document Can't map name to dispid: StoryRanges

What does this mean? Could it be related to the problem I am experiencing?

I have ongoing problems with Document templates not saving it appears.
since my entries in the Forum a week or so ago. I posted a response but have had no reply since.

If I open a document template with an attached RTF document and edit it in MS Word then Save it, exit word and Edit it again the change is Saved.

If I then Save the template and reopen the Document the change is saved ok

BUT if I then Close the Template form, reopen it and Edit the document the change is gone.

I am using build 1027

I have found a Java Out of memory error in the AwareIM log and increased memory yet again. to JBOSS 256M TOMCAT 128 CONFIG 128 in case this is the issue but the save error still exists.

If I delete sections of the document it seemed to save OK but it seemd more about the size of the document

I have not as yet discounted some sort of attibute tag mismatch issue although I have crawled all over the document.

NB. I just tried it again after a reboot / restart and it seemd to save OK, but there is now an Integrity problem that just lists the name of the document with no further details. If I click on Edit nothing happens and I can see any hint in the logs

I have emailed the current .txt version that is causing the Integrity problem

I also found that edits I made to the RTF version in word (also attached) introduced corruption in the AwareIM tags - invisible until Saved then a long error dialog pops up. Problem removed by copying and pasting the section of text to Notepad, then back again into Word however further edits in Word could reintroduce similar problems.

However, The essential error I think I have is that Save doesnot necessarily display errors it finds. The only way to see if I made a clean change was to Close the Config page and see if it exited or not. (Of cousrse this explained the other problem I was having about changes not sticking as I was merrily making changes Saving and not Closing then publishing - change failed - then going back into the editor sometimes after closing to find my changes had disappeared.

I have found a resolution to my Problem:

Save in Config DocTemplate Form does not report all problems particularly when editing an RTF file as text template. The way I eventually noticed that an error was being detected (apart from my changes not working) was that Close would prompt to save the document, even though I had already saved it, and then would not Close the form.

My habit was to edit a Save then generate a new Test version therefore didnt twig to any errors except that my world wasnt working.

Also Integrity check does not report actual error, or open the document in Word. This forces a trial and error approach to locate the error. i.e. deleting parts of the document to see when a Save and also Integrity Check works

This was further complicated by the tendency of Word to insert hidden rtf tags into AwareIM tags which required the text to be pasted into a text editor and then copied and pasted back.

ps the error was an extra "." in a tag

Can I Suggest that Save and Close functions report errors they may find??.
