Integration of Multiple developers / multiple changes

How do you suggest we manage a situation where there are multiple developers working on a BSV each with potentially multiple changes assigned.

Traditionally we use a sandbox for each developer that allows them to develop and test a single change in isolation with a whole copy of the currently baselined version. This also allows regression testing to take place to ensure that individual change caused no side effects.

Once unit test is complete; integration of the individual changes occurs checking that no two changes have modified the same code item.

Once all changes have been integrated then integration test follows to confirm all individual changes still work as in unit test and then a further regression test.

AwareIM works fine in a single developer scenario at present, but we have not attempted multiple developers on the same project as yet. I dont see any mechanisms for multiple parralel development paths or for integration of changes, collision detection, automated testing etc.

I would be most interested in the thoughts of AwareIM staff and also other users who may be dealing with this scenario as to how they currently approach this issue.

Team development presents its challenges:
1) An item of work must be "lockable" to prevent other team members from modifying an item while it is being developed by another team member
2) Even if an item is locked it is often necessary to work on the same item in parallel in which case a developer must be able to merge his changes with the changes done by others

In programming an item of work is usually a file. In Aware IM it is a business space version. Aware IM does allow developers to lock versions so it caters for 1). The 2) remains a problem as it is in the traditional development tools.

Just like in traditional development tools the answer to 2) is to break up your application into independent modules/chunks so that integration is easier. But you do need to merge your changes. This can be more or less painful depending on how well you split the work between developers.

It would seem that as AwareIm already goes part of the way to supporting development changes in its versioning that it would be a natural feature to add the controls necessary for more than one person to work on a BSV at one time.

As well as checking out or locking say a BO, query or other object within AwareIM it would also be useful to have a collision detection function when imporrting or merging that flags when multiple changes

Of course a graphical development environment has some other disadvantages over text based development in that it is more dofficult to "diff" sets of changes.

Does the XML export have sufficient granularity to support either text basd changes to a BSV or using diff to detect changes?

There maybe certain properties not exported to XML yet, so diff would be a safer way.
