Single Sign On Question

Hi there,

I am involved in integrating a number of different web applications together to produce a seamless web offering. Part of this offering involves data entry and another part involves reporting. Cognos 8 BI is mandatory for the reporting and I am considering AwareIM for the data entry and business logic creation.

The requirement that seems the trickiest to meet is for Single Sign On. Now Cognos can surface its Web UI as a set of WSRP portlets which makes embedding it within a portal a reasonably simple task, however I am a bit stuck with AwareIM. How do I set up AwareIM to handle an externally authenticated user? I am not stuck on the idea of a portal so any ideas (and preferably simpler ones) would be greatly appreciated. I have also considered a reverse authentication proxy architecture (Apache fronting and securing the web apps behind it) to achieve this, however this starts to get rather complex for this particular problem domain.

At the moment the only possibility is to transfer external users into Aware IM - thus effectively duplicating them in Aware IM. The data can be transferred as a CSV file. After this is done it is possible to pass user credentials to Aware IM without activating any user interface.

In the near future we will add a feature that will allow Aware IM to connect to existing users in an external database, in which case you won't need to transfer users to Aware IM if the data about users is stored already in some database.

Single sign-on using LDAP and Active X has been implemented long time ago and is available as a product option. Please see our web site for more details.
