The dreaded - OutOfMemoryError

Good Afternoon Aware,

I am rather confused. I have followed the many different memory allocation suggestions on the forum and have not been able to get around the following error:

java.lang.OutOfMemoryError

It is produced on the log file for the configuration tool. I could go into detail on what files I have adjusted but it might be more benficial to the group if you tell us which files must be adjusted to adjust memory for each component [ex. Tomcat, JBoss, Aware IM Server, Configuration Tool...etc]. Will these be written over when we upgrade to a new version?

You mentioned in one of my earlier posts to adjust the startupOptions.props file but I only find this file in the Samples folder. Is this supposed to reside in the Bin folder?

I am stuck because I make changes to my application then attempt to test and I am presented with the OutOfMemory error which then does not allow me to do anything else without backing out completely and starting over.

The instructions on how to adjust memory for different components are in numerous posts throughout this forum and also in the Installation Guide. Please have a look there.

The startupOptions.props file in the SAMPLES directory has to be copied to the BIN directory and edited to adjust settings of different components.

I see that I am going to have to work for my lunch on this one. Granted there are suggestions on how to make these adjustments everywhere in the forum. I was hoping for the sake of clarity to have it explained to all users in one spot.

For the dumb user (like myself) I have gleened that I need to make adjustments to the startupOptions.props file (which does in fact reside in the Samples folder) then copy the file into the Bin folder so that the system will recognize the modifications.

2) Memory settings for Tomcat and JBoss are set in the startupOptions.props file (the sample of this file is in the "samples" directory - copy this file into the BIN directory to get Aware IM to use it). Add the following after "java": -Xmx96M where 96M is the memory you are allocating. Can be any number greater than this provided your server has enough memory

Am I to take from this statement that I make the following change to the file?

If not, then I am already confused. If so, once this has been completed I should be able to move this file to the Bin folder.

Now I am also reading in the posts that If I want to adjust the Aware IM Server that I must make the same type of changes to the startAwareIM.bat file.

Then I must not do the preceeding if I am running Aware as a service. In that case, I would merely make the adjustments to the following files in the Bin folder:

JBoss.conf
awareim.conf
Tomcat.conf

I also gather from the posts that all of my work will be eliminated the next time that I install a new version of Aware...Bummer.

A small suggestion for your site would be to add a FAQ section on the forum so that topics such as memory allocation would have one resting place.

Please forgive me. I took a moment, actually read your comments and then read through the installation manual. Pages 6 & 7 clearly state what I was looking for. I had been looking in the User Guide and did not find anything on the subject.

I apologize for my abruptness. It is always frusterating looking for answers in a haystack when you are in dire need of assistance.
