Hosting Aware across Sub Domains

I have been wondering about this for a long time....

Not that I need this now but....

Imagine I have an app and Multiple Tenants.

Rather than using the MBS model (ie.... many Tenants in the same bsv) I use SBS... A separate Business Space for each Tenant (which is easier for data separation).

Each Tenant would get their own Sub Domain...

ie.... TenantA.MyDomain.com, TenantB.MyDomain.com etc....

Now imagine... some tenants only have, say, less than 100 employees but some tenants might have 1,000...

It would make sense to accommodate a number of smaller installations on one server and for the larger tenants to be on their own server.

So.... is it possible to say..point TenantA, TenantB, Tenant D, Tenant F to their sub domain BS on one server and then point Tenant C to their BS on a different server and Tenant E to their BS on some other server?

Sorry if this sounds like a trivial question (which I am sure it is) but I am a bit of a vacant space when comes to this stuff.

Sub domain redirections would achieve this. You need records in you DNS.

I think this scenario is more a scaling question that would be better answered by understanding how DNS works and configuration of virtual hosts for Tomcat (or mod_proxy if you use apache).
Having sub-domain's isn't all that hard, you'll need to create entries for each subdomain pointing to the main server and then make a few adjustments to vhosting lines in server.xml to handle the request.

Logically this rule of thumb would make sense, however its dependant on how complex the application is. If you have massive processes that do fairly complex routines, it might be better to have dedicated resources to each instance. Load testing would be needed to be done to establish a balance between user experience and resources i would imagine.
